Louisiana Tech Softball is teaming up with the Domestic Abuse Resistance Team (DART) of North Louisiana to host a charity softball game. The game will be held Saturday, April 11, when the Techsters host Fresno State for a Western Athletic Conference double-header. As a tribute to those affected by domestic abuse, both teams will wear purple, DART’s signature color. During the game, food will be sold and a raffle will be held.
In an effort to educate the public on the many services that DART provides, as well inform the community about the seriousness and prevalence of domestic abuse, the staff at DART and the Lady Techsters want to inform you of ways to reach out to those affected. This is where you come in. We are asking for any type of donation, whether monetary, food for the concession stand, purple shirts/uniform tops, socks, raffle tickets, or any number of items (hats, t-shirts, trinkets) for the gift baskets that will be raffled off. All proceeds will go to DART. Your tax-deductible gift will help not only ensure a successful game but, more importantly, extend the services of a much-needed organization.
These statistics show just how widespread the crime of domestic abuse is in our country:
- On average, more than three women are murdered by their husbands or boyfriends in this country every day. In 2000, 1,247 women were killed by an intimate partner. The same year, 440 men were killed by an intimate partner.
- Approximately one in five female high school students reports being physically and/or sexually abused by a dating partner.
- In a national survey of more than 6,000 American families, 50 percent of the men who frequently assaulted their wives also frequently abused their children.
- Almost one-third of female homicide victims that are reported in police records are killed by an intimate partner.
- Boys who witness domestic violence are twice as likely to abuse their own partners and children when they become adults.
